The Weir Group PLC (“Weir”) has extended its leading presence and capabilities in global mining and oil sands markets with the acquisition of a leading Canadian based manufacturer of wear resistant linings. In addition, Weir’s best cost supply chain strategy has been advanced with the acquisition of a Malaysian foundry and agreement to acquire a heavy bay foundry in South Africa. Both facilities are well placed to serve the fast growing mining markets of Africa and Asia-Pacific. The combined consideration for the three acquisitions will be £55m and funded from existing bank facilities.

The Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO) has selected Weir Minerals to supply pumps to be used in the dredging of the New Doha Sea Port in Qatar. Construction of the port, which will be one of the deepest in the world and will cover an area of 26.5 sq km, will require approximately 45 million cubic metres of mainly hard rock, to be dredged from a 20km-long approach channel and the basin itself.

Weir Minerals has secured a £3.7 million order to supply pumps, valves, cyclone clusters and slurry hoses for one of Russia’s biggest copper concentrate production plants. The company was selected by Outotec, a Finnish contractor which is delivering the new copper concentrator facility in Cheylabinsk for ZAO Miheevsky – a subsidiary of the Russian Copper Company (RCC).
