The Mount Isa sales staff service the region from Mount Isa to Townsville and up to Weipa in the far north, a total area of approx 810,000 square kms.
Travel in this area is quite remote. The drive to Incitec's
Phosphate Hill fertiliser plant takes about 3.5 hrs from Mt Isa and
in that time you might only see 2 other cars the whole
trip. Temperatures during summer quite often sit around the 40+
degree mark. The weather can change very quickly and due to the
amount of minerals in the area you get some of the wildest
electrical storms. When it rains the whole area is cut off by
rivers that only have water in them when it rains. Rest of the year
they are dry.
Safety in remote areas is very important Weir employees
always carry in their 4WD 20 litres of water, some food, a
Hat, UHF two way, Satellite phone, GPS locater, fire extinguisher,
cargo barrier and bull bar. That's a little different to the
standard kit for an Area manager in a populated territory.
